Waste Complaints

Enforcement actions against illegal waste activity are a matter for the Local Authorities and the Office of Environmental Enforcement (OEE) within the Environmental Protection Agency

How to Make a Complaint

Environmental complaints arise from issues that pose a threat to the environment, a threat to health or an adverse impact on nature, amenity and lifestyle.

If you would like to make a waste complaint in your area, there are a number of approaches you can take:

1. CONTACT THE PERSON OR BUSINESS CAUSING THE PROBLEM

If you come across an environmental problem, the quickest way to fix it is to contact the person or business you think is causing the problem. They may not be aware of the problem or its effects and may be happy to fix it.

If you contact them, you should include the following:

  • Outline the issue to them
  • Explain how you would like to see it resolved
  • Ask them to specify a timescale for this to be achieved
  • Ask to be informed when the work has been completed.

2. CONTACT THE WASTE MANAGEMENT SECTION IN YOUR LOCAL AUTHORITY

You can contact the Waste Management section in your local authority in a confidential manner.  Below are the links to each local authority and how to make an environmental complaint.

3. CALL THE NATIONAL ENVIRONEMENTAL COMPLAINTS LINE (NECL)

Tel: 1800 365 123, open 24-hours, 7-days per week.

4. USE THE “SEE IT? SAY IT!” SMARTPHONE APP.

In cases, where the local authority has investigated your initial complaint and the problem persists, you can contact the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA will then investigate the issue and resolve it where possible.  See link below to EPA Environmental Complaint Form.
